Sandstone, Travertine and Premium Paving for Lake Macquarie Homes, Pools and Waterfront Properties

Good paving starts well below the surface. On every job we excavate to a firm subgrade, then lay and compact a crushed rock base with a plate compactor. For pool surrounds, driveways and alfresco areas that take heavy use, we lay the stone on a reinforced concrete slab with a full mortar bed. We work with sawn and split sandstone, tumbled and honed travertine, bluestone, granite and porcelain. Every slab is cut on a wet saw and set to string lines with designed falls, so rainwater runs away from your house and pool.

Conditions in Lake Macquarie are hard on stone. Humid summers and shaded side passages grow mould and algae on porous sandstone. Homes near the water get salt air and wind-driven spray. Parts of the area sit on reactive clay that swells and shrinks between dry spells and summer storms, while lakefront blocks often have sandy, free-draining soil that needs a well-compacted base. We choose stone and sealers to suit your site. We use penetrating impregnating sealers that let the stone breathe, slip-resistant finishes around water, and strip drains and expansion joints where the slab needs them.

Most of our paving is part of a bigger project. Picture a new build with bare clay where the backyard should be, or a waterfront home where the old pavers have heaved and stained around the pool. We plan the paving together with the coping, steps, walls and drainage, so every level and finish matches. Paving often ties in with our pool landscaping and outdoor entertaining areas and kitchens, with one team managing the whole build from design to handover.

How We Build Sandstone and Travertine Paving That Lasts

From laser levels and compacted bases to cutting, setting and sealing

Step 1: Site Levels, Layout and Stone Selection

We survey the site with a laser level and mark finished heights against your floor levels, pool coping and boundaries. We then set out the paving pattern and confirm where water will drain. You choose your stone from real samples, so you can see how sandstone or travertine looks in your own light.

Step 2: Excavation and Base Preparation

A mini excavator removes topsoil and soft clay down to a firm subgrade. We lay crushed rock in layers and compact each one with a plate compactor. Where the job calls for it, we form, reinforce and pour a concrete slab, with drainage pipes and strip drains set in at this stage.

Step 3: Laying, Cutting and Setting the Stone

Each slab is bedded in mortar or screeded sand and tapped down with a rubber mallet to the string line. Cuts around pool edges, steps and garden beds are made on a wet saw for clean, tight joints. We check falls as we go so no puddles form against the house or pool.

Step 4: Grouting, Sealing and Final Clean

We fill the joints with grout or jointing sand, then wash the surface to remove mortar haze. Once the stone has cured and dried, we apply a penetrating sealer suited to the stone and its position. Before handover we walk you through the finished area and explain how to care for it.

What Quality Natural Stone Paving Does for Your Lake Macquarie Home

Level, safe and good-looking surfaces built for local conditions

Paving That Stays Level for Years

A deep, compacted base and proper drainage stop the sinking, rocking and lifting you see on rushed jobs. Your pool surround, patio and paths stay flat and safe to walk on, even after heavy summer storms and long dry spells.

Safer, Cooler Surfaces Around the Pool

Honed travertine and light-coloured sandstone stay cooler underfoot than many darker surfaces, so bare feet are more comfortable in summer. Slip-resistant finishes and well-drained falls mean less standing water where kids and guests walk wet.

Stone That Resists Salt, Stains and Mould

The right stone and sealer for your site cuts down on salt damage near the lake, mould in shaded areas and staining from barbecue grease or leaves. That means less scrubbing, better colour and a surface that still looks right years after the build.

Why Homeowners Trust Us With Premium Paving and Stonework

One Team for the Whole Outdoor Build

We design and build the paving, coping, retaining walls, decks, pergolas and drainage as one project. That means levels line up, finishes match and you deal with one team instead of several trades.

Ground Preparation Suited to Local Soils

We know the difference between reactive clay on a new estate block and sandy soil on a lakefront site. We adjust excavation depth, base material and slab design to suit what is under your yard.

Stone and Sealers Chosen for Coastal Conditions

Salt air, humidity and summer storms all affect how stone ages. We recommend stone, finishes and sealers that suit your site's exposure, so your paving keeps its colour and grip.

Detailed Work Around Pools, Steps and Edges

Clean wet-saw cuts, tight joints and well-fitted coping are what make premium paving look finished. We take care around pool edges, stair treads and garden borders where shortcuts show.

Paving and Natural Stone Questions From Lake Macquarie Homeowners

Common questions answered

Is sandstone or travertine better for a pool surround near Lake Macquarie?

Both work well when they are chosen and sealed properly. Travertine is dense and cool underfoot, and it holds up well to salt pool water. Sandstone gives a softer, natural look but is more porous, so it needs a quality penetrating sealer and periodic resealing, especially on lakefront and shaded sites.

What affects the cost of natural stone paving?

The main factors are the stone type and grade, the size of the area, and whether it needs a concrete slab or a compacted base. Site access, excavation of clay or rock, the number of cuts around pools and steps, and drainage work also change the price. We give you an itemised quote after a site visit so you can see where the costs sit.

How long does a paving project take?

It depends on the size of the area, the base required, curing times for concrete and mortar, and the weather. Paving that is part of a larger landscape build is scheduled around the other trades. We set out a realistic program before work starts and keep you updated as it progresses.

Why do some pavers sink or lift after a few years?

Most failures come from a thin or poorly compacted base, poor drainage, or tree roots. Reactive clay soils around the area make this worse, because they swell when wet and shrink when dry. We dig to firm ground, compact in layers and build in falls and drains so water does not sit under the stone.

How often should natural stone paving be resealed?

It depends on the stone, the sealer used, sun exposure and how much traffic the area gets. Pool surrounds and lakefront areas usually need attention sooner than sheltered courtyards. A simple test is to splash water on the stone, and if it darkens and soaks in quickly, it is time to reseal.
